Study on effect of atorvastatine therapy on the patient of sepsis associated with ARDS
Sepsis is a complex syndrome caused by an uncontrolled systemic inflammatory response to
infection which ultimately results in multi organ dysfunction and ARDS. This study was aimed to observe the effect of atorvastatine therapy on the mortality and morbidity of the patient of sepsis associated with ARDS.The patient of sepsis with ARDS admitted in our ICU who were tolerating enteral feed were randomized to two groups. Atorvastatine group were given 40 mg of drug daily while other group were given placebo for the whole duration of hospital stay.
Total 100 patients were included in the study. 48 patients were in placebo group and 52 patients were in atorvastatine group. There were no significant difference observed in liver profile, duration of hospital stay and mortality of both the groups. Serum cholesterol and albumin createnine ratio were significantly lower in atorvastatine group. Requirement of PEEP to maintain oxygenation was less in atorvastatine group.
It was concluded that the administration of atorvastatine to the patients with sepsis associated
with ARDS may be of benefit. However, further trial is required.
