With this paper, it is a little effort for public awareness on the subject.

In modern era, the knowledge of patients and public is very limited about anaesthesiology and anaesthesiologist. Role of anaesthesiologist is very important during any kind of surgery. When patient goes to hospital, he will inquire about the surgeon for his surgery but who will anaesthetize & look after him before, during and after the operation? He does not know, though his life is in hands of anaesthesiologist. It is the role of anaesthesiologist to anaesthetize and take care of the patient. ISA i.e. Indian Society of Anaesthesiologists, the parent national body also instructed all the members all over India to arrange public awareness programmes that will make the patients, relatives and lay public aware of the importance of us, our subject and work.

Lots of studies have been done on “PUBLIC AWARENESS ABOUT ANAESTHESIOLOGY AND ANAESTHESIOLOGISTS” during 2003-2013 in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Turky, Brazil, UK, USA and published in different journals of anaesthesiology in India and abroad. Studies concluded that the patients and lay persons hardly know about us and our specialty. There is widespread ignorance, misbeliefs, misconceptions and apprehensions about us and our specialty still prevalent in India and other countries. Studies suggested that sufficient time should be given to educate the patients and lay persons about us, our subject and role. MEDIA and PRESS can also play a great role in educating the patients and lay persons.

So, in view of above I prepared this paper, i.e. “PUBLIC AWARENESS ABOUT ANAESTHESIOLOGY AND ANAESTHESIOLOGISTS – SOLUTIONS TO IMPROVE” for oral presentation in ISACON 2014.
