Institute:

A prospective randomized comparative study of hemodynamic response to intubation with or without using FROVA airway intubating device in ASA I and II patients was conducted in general surgery, orthopaedic , urosurgery ,plastic and gynaecological surgical theatres in LTMGH, Mumbai.

The study consisted of 30 ASA I &II patients with normal airways in each group. The Aim was to study and compare the hemodynamic response (pulse rate, blood pressure, SpO2) to intubation with or without using FROVA, the laryngoscopic time with or without the use of FROVA and the success rate of FROVA aided intubation( number of attempts and cross over to conventional laryngoscopy)

The hemodynamic variables were analyzed using paired and unpaired student t test. P value <0.05 was considered significant for all statistical comparisons

The Results showed significant increase in hemodynamic response in FROVA group. The duration of laryngoscopy was significantly higher in FROVA group. All the intubations in the FROVA group were completed in the first attempt implying the ease of insertion with it. The mean EtCO2 rise was significantly higher in the FROVA group.

Thus the increased laryngoscopic time and the raised EtCO2 could have contributed to significant hypertension and tachycardia in the FROVA group. These parameters need to be further studied in patients with difficult airway.
