ABSTRACT : To compare the effect of Fentanyl with Bupivacaine and plain Bupivacaine in peribulbaranesthesia

METHODS : Forty patients belonging to ASA I & II, undergoing elective intraocular procedures were divided into two groups, 20 patients in each group. In controlled group, patients received only plain bupivacaine.Fentanyl group received 20 mcg of fentanyl added to bupivacaine. The time for the onset of lid and globe akinesia was assessed in the first 10 minutes of the block.Postoperative analgesia was assessed by Numeric rating score every 30 minutes till 6 hours.

RESULTS : : Fentanyl group showed significant faster onset and longer duration of globe anesthesia, lid akinesia, and the time to first analgesic request when compared to plain bupivacaine group.

CONCLUSIONS : : Addition of fentanyl to local Bupivacaine appears to be safe and clinically superior adjuvant, fastens the onset of the block and prolongs the duration of akinesia and provides effective postoperative analgesia.
