Achille Mario Dogliotti was the first person to describe the identification of epidural space using loss of resistance technique, with constant pressure applied to the piston of the syringe. Saline or air can be used for the identification of epidural space. Saline technique is generally favoured as there is increased risk of complications with the air technique such as patchy effect or air embolism.
Syringes are being devised like the Episure and the Epimatic for identification of the epidural space but they are too costly for our class of patients to afford. The technique described herein will use material easily available in the routine tray prepared for epidural insertion and usea hands free technique similar to the expensive syringes available in the market. A video presentation of the technique will be made and a demo will be provided.
