Aims and objectives: To study the effects of Clonidine (0.15mg) as an adjuvant to Bupivacaine in Brachial plexus block through supraclavicular approach. To compare onset of sensory and motor blockade, duration of sensory and motor blockade and duration of postoperative analgesia in both the groups.
Methods : A randomized controlled double blinded study was done among 50 patients undergoing elective upperlimb surgeries in our tertiary care hospital in Amalapuram. 50 patients of age group between 18 & 60, ASA grade 1 and 2 were randomly allocated into 2 groups of 25 each. Group I: Twenty five patients received 40ml of Bupivacaine (0.25%) plus Clonidine (0.150mg) in supraclavicular block. Group II: Twenty five patients received 40ml of Bupivacaine (0.25%) plus 1ml 0.9% N.S in supraclavicular block.
Conclusion : Clonidine as an adjuvant to Bupivacaine in brachial plexus block has the advantage of early onset of sensory and motor blockade, prolonged duration of action and reduced need for rescue analgesia for first 24 hours.
