ABSTRACT : : Adjuvants to local anaesthetics have been tried to hasten the onset of action and prolong the duration of analgesia. This study will be undertaken to evaluate the efficacy of Clonidine 75μg in comparision to Buprenorphine 150 μg as adjunct to 17ml of 0.75% Ropivacaine for epidural anaesthesia with special emphasis on their Sensory.motor and analgesic properties in lower limb and lower abdominal surgeries
METHODS : A randomized clinical trial conducted in tertiary hospital with ethical committee clearance on 60 patients, aged 18-55years, ASA I and II,divided into 2 groups, 30 patient in each group Group RC: 17ml 0.75% Ropivacaine+ 75µg Clonidine Group RB: 17ml 0.75% Ropivacaine+ 150µg Buprenorphine
RESULTS : : Onset of sensory block was faster in both Clonidine and Buprenorphine. RC :10.1±1.5 min and RB:10.72±0.26 min. Duration of analgesia was prolonged in Buprenorphine group. RC: 340±22.6 min and RB: 516.38±29.14 min. No difference in degree of motor block between two group
CONCLUSIONS : Ropivacaine 0.75% with Clonidine 75µg or Buprenorphine 150µg provide safe anaesthesia when given epidurally for lower limb and lower abdominal aurgeries. Addition of clonidine and Buprinorphine hastened the onset of sensory block, while addition of Buprinorphine provided excellent post operative analgesia
