ABSTRACT :

METHODS : 60 adult patients of either sex, classified as ASA physical status I, who were scheduled to undergo an elective middle ear surgery, were enrolled for a prospective, randomized controlled trial. They were randomly divided into 2 groups of 30 each. One group receiving iv clonidine 0.8 mcg/kg (group A) 2mins prior to induction and the other group iv midazolam (0.02 mg/kg) 2mins prior to induction (group B). The basal BP (MAP), heart rate was noted preoperatively and then intraoperative MAP, heart rate, etCO2 readings were taken.

RESULTS : In our study we found at the end of 60mins mean arterial pressure falls to 65.96±2.93mmHg in Group A and it was 88.76±4.60mmHg in Group B and heart rate was 65.5±1.92b/m in Group A and 77.6±5.3b/m in group B and results were statistically significant.

CONCLUSIONS : So we conclude that hemodynamic stability was better with clonidine than with midazolam when used as a premedicant. Clonidine provides many desirable effects like sedation, analgesia, anxiolysis and hemodynamic stability making it a potentially useful anestheticpremedicant.
