METHODS : This study is done on patients admitted to JSS Hospital, Mysore to undergo surgeries under spinal anaesthesia. It is a comparative study with simple random sampling technique, 60 patients selected and divided into two groups of 30 each.
Group L: Intrathecal hyperbaric (0.5%) levobupivacaine. Isobaric levobupivacaine made hyperbaric by adding 0.5ml of 50% dextrose to 3ml of levobupivacaine.
Group B: Intrathecal hyperbaric (0.5%) bupivacaine 3 ml with 0.5 ml of normal saline

RESULTS : In this study we found that all patients achieved sensory block of T10 or higher. No difference in the onset and duration of motor and sensory blockade and intraoperative hemodynamic changes in both groups. However, the degree of motor block and quality of intraoperative anaesthesia was lesser in group L.

CONCLUSIONS : We conclude that hyperbaric levobupivacaine 0.5% provides similar sensory anaesthesia but leser degree of motor block compared with 0.5%, hyperbaric bupivacaine when given intrathecally for surgeries under spinal anaesthesia.
