A Randomized Controlled Study To Evaluate The Role Of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy In Management Of Acute Severe Traumatic Brain Injury
Hyper Baric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is an adjunctive therapy that has been proposed to improve outcome in acute severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients. We conducted a prospective RCT to evaluate and compare the role of HBOT with conventional neurosurgical treatment.
Material and MethodsThe study was conducted in 50 patients of acute severe TBI patients. The patients were randomized into two groups, Group I (received conventional neurosurgical treatment) and Group II (received HBOT along with conventional neurosurgical treatment). Both groups analysed at 10, 20,30 days, 3 months and 6 months after enrollment in study.
ResultsSignificant improvement in GCS (Group I- 11.62, Group II-13.36 at 6 months), motor, sensory and cognitive function observed after administration of HBOT. 72% patients had a favourable outcome in Group I as compared to 24% in Group II.
Discussion Our study findings corroborated with findings of Lin JW et al., Dr. Paul Harch et al., Ren et al.
ConclusionHBOT has a definitive role in improvement of outcome in acute severe TBI patients. Hence it should be encouraged as an adjunctive therapy along with rehabilitation in TBI patients to recover and return to a normal life.
