buprenorphine patches for post-operative analgesia in lower abdominal surgeries under subarachnoid block
Institute: 12 air force hospital
ABSTRACT : to evaluate the efficacy of buprenorphine patches as a mode of analgesia in the post-operative period
METHODS : A single center randomised control trial was carried out with ASA 1 &2 patients. Thirty-three out of 83patients were in the study group, who received transdermal patches releasing buprenorphine. The patients were analysed on the basis of their age, gender, ASA status, duration of surgery, incidence of paraspinal twitch during subarachnoid block, time gap between subarachnoid block & the 1stdose of analgesia in the post-operative period and requirement of analgesia in the initial three days following surgery. The data was analysed by SPSS version 20.0.
RESULTS : The groups were comparable on the basis of demographic profile. But there was statistically significant difference with respect to incidence of paraspinal twitch and requirement of analgesia following surgery.
CONCLUSIONS : Buprenorphine transdermal patches can be used as one of the modes of analgesia in the post-operative period though proper patient selection may improve satisfaction.
