Management Of GuillianBarre Syndrome In Respiratory Intensive Care Unit – A Review Of 50 Cases
Osmania Medical College
To evaluate and analyse the various treatment protocols of Guillian-Barre Syndrome(GBS) in ICU scenario.
METHODS : :A total of 50 patients, who were admitted in our ICU during the period of 2004-2014,were selected for this study.Patients belonging to both the sexes and varying age groups between 15-50 years were selected. The ICU admission protocols and management in ICU’s,critical life support, treatment protocols, enteral and parenteral nutrition strategies, special new treatment concepts were analysed and discussed in deail. Other variables like ventilation care, complications in ICU,reasons for mortality and morbidity and unforeseen complications and overall successful and unsuccessful outcomes were also considered . Role of plasmapheresis;i.vimmunoglobulins, methyl prednisolone and the other adjuncts in therapy are evaluated
RESULTS :Many patients required mechanical ventilation beyond 30 days. Only 25% of patients could be weaned off the ventilator in less than 30 days. 5 patients did not require endotracheal intubation and could be managed by oxygen mask and CPAP with supportive therapy
CONCLUSIONS :Guillian-Barre Syndrome(GBS) if treated well and with carefully observed protocols will ensure reasonably decent and successful outcomes .The deaths in the GBS are most of the times due to autonomic dysfunction or multiorgan dysfunction syndrome
