ABSTRACT :
• To study the hemodynamic effects of unilateral spinal anaesthesia with bupivacaine 0.5%heavy - clonidine combination and bupivacaine 0.5% heavy alone. • To study onset & duration of sensory & motor blockade in both the groups. • To study the duration of post operative analgesia in both the groups. • To study the occurrence of side effects and complications if any in both the groups.

METHODS :
The study was carried out in 80 patients of either sex, age between 18- 60 yrs. All were of ASA grade I or II physical status. All of them were posted for undergoing elective unilateral lower extremity orthopedic surgery.
• Patients were divided into two groups of 40 each according to computer generated randomization. • Group 1 – patients received 1.5ml 0.5% Bupivacaine heavy. • Group 2 – patients received 1.5ml 0.5% Bupivacaine heavy + Clonidine 0.5µg/kg.

RESULTS :
There was no difference in the onset of sensory and motor blockade in both the groups. The duration of sensory and motor blockade and duration of post-op analgesia was significantly increased in group

CONCLUSIONS :
Use of combination of clonidine in the dose of 0.5ug/kg with 1.5cc 0.5% bupivacaine heavy in unilateral spinal anaesthesia significantly prolong the sensory and motor blockade and postoperative analgesia with minimal adverses effects.
