Abstract:
Hanging is a common method of suicide in the Indian scenario. We report a case of attempted suicidal hanging treated over a period of 2 months in our critical care unit. The patient presented with irregular respiration and poor clinical status (E1VTM1). The patient received immediate intensive care treatment and responded well. But suddenly patient developed severe bradycardia followed by two episodes of cardiac arrest.Patient was managed as per the guidelines of ACLS and patient recovered both the times. On neckradiographic pictures there was no evidence of cervical spine injurybut MRI brain revealed mild diffuse cerebral atrophy. We concluded that the case of hanging should beaggressively resuscitated and treated irrespective of initial presentation. This is well supported by the excellent outcome in our case despite poor initial condition.Besides victim of hanging patient may develop severe bradycardia and cardiac arrest even without any cervical spine injury.
