The modern anaesthesiologist is a combination of an efficient clinician, a physician, and a clinical pharmacologist who can diagnose medical problems and treat appropriate conditions with suitable pharmacological agents. Above all that he has the skill and the knowledge to operate and interpret monitors and supporting equipments such as ventilators.

 

Because of that, present-day anaesthesiologists have expanded their services out side the operation theatre also for the benefit of the needy patients.

 

Intensive care units: ICU
The critically ill patients are taken care of by the anaesthetists as primary physicians and in case of necessity, other specialists are consulted

 

Intensive respiratory care units: IRCU
Patients who have primary respiratory problem of respiratory arrests due to Poisoning, Snakebite, Neurological diseases etc are given care with Ventilator support and metabolic management.

Obstetric analgesia Service:
Painless labour is an almost routine practice in developed countries and the anaesthesiologists because of their special skill offer this service.
 
In our country also, this service has been started in bigger centers though not in full scale as in other countries.

Pain clinics:
Patients suffering with chronic pain due to neurological conditions, patients suffering from cancer pain are given pain relief using various modalities of treatment suited for them.

 

Accident Rescue Service:
The resuscitating of severely injured accident victim ate the scene of accident and bringing him to the hospital while being supported.
 
This service again is a wonderful life saving service that increases the survival rate of the victims, which will be otherwise very low.

In spite of all these inherent superiorities, this speciality Anaesthesiology has not enjoyed its due respect and position in our country as it enjoys in other developed countries. We shall hope that the situation will change to a better state.
