Effect of Low Molecular Weight Dextran And 6%Hydroxyethyl Starch 450 on Blood Sugar Levels During Surgery Under Spinal Anaestheisa
Institute : Shadan Institute of Medical Sciences
Abstract : Objectives: Colloids Are Used As Preloading Fluids Prophylactically To Limit The Complications Folllowing Sympathetic Blockade In Spinal Anaesthesia. Dextrans And Hydroxyethyl Starch Are Made Up Of Large Ethylated Starch Or Glucose Polymers And Are Metabolised By Serum Amylases To Produce Smaller Molecules Of Starch Polymers And Free Glucose Residues.Even They Carry A Potential To Accelerate Blood Glucose Levels Subsequently Intravenous Administration Under StressfullConditions. We Carried Out The Study With An Objective To Examine And Compare The Effects Of Dextran 40 And 6%Hydroxyethyl Starch 450 On Blood Sugar Levels For Surgery Under Spinal Anaesthesia.
Methods : Methods: 150 Non Diabetic Adult Patients Posted For Elective Surgery Under Spinal Anaesthesia Randomly Divided Into 3 Groups To Receive Ringer Lactate 20ml/Kg (Group1), Anaesthesia As Preloading Fluid And Serial Blood Sugar Estimation Were Done Using Glucometer There After At Regular Intervals Upto 240 Min From The Baseline Reading.
Results : Results: All The Three Preloading Fluids Increase Blood Sugar Levels Intraoperatively But Rise With Dextran 40 Was Sustained And Significant.
Conclusions : Conclusion: We Thus Conclude That Dextran 40 Causes A Sustained And Significant Rise In Perioperative Blood Sugar LevelsDEXTRAN 40 10ML/KG (GROUP2), 6% HYDROXYETHYL STARCH 450 10ML/KG (GROUP3), OVER HALF AN HOUR PRIOR TO SPINAL
